Ilmer Rozendaal winner ITs Ton Lutz Award 2011
During the last evening of the 22nd edition of the ITs Festival Amsterdam no fewer than seven awards were awarded. In a packed Compagnietheatre actor Eelco Smits and actress Karina Smulders presented the festive award show. The ITs Ton Lutz Award, the award for the best director, went to Ilmer Rozendaal with her performance Medea.
To stage Medea's unthinkable act is a bold undertaking. Nevertheless Ilmer Rozendaal succeeds. The play has a strong focus on language, so a lot comes down to the directing of the actors. Rozendaal has put together a strong location performance and she uses all the possibilities the space of the NDSM wharf offers her. Here, a director is at work who dares to move us, who directs with both her mind and her heart. Rozendaal, student of the theatre maker course at the Toneelacademie Maastricht wins 4500,- in prize money to be spent on the personal development of the already talented director.
The ITs Choreography Award is won by Simon Tanguy, who performed in the Makers Present Dance programma with his performance Japan. The jury was impressed by the dramatic gestures and ideas in his performance. The choreographer made choices which supported a layered viewing of the big theme: agony. Tanguy, student of the School for New Dance Development, pockets 4500,-, made available by the SNS REAAL Fonds, to be spent on personal and artistic development.
The Kemn-A-ward, the award for the most promising, talented actor or actress, has been won by Mattias van de Vijver, from the acting course of the Toneelacademie Maastricht. De jury wrote: From the moment Mattias walks onto the stage in Plukt ons! as a bizarre visitor, all eyes are on him, immediately. Funny in spite of himself, and with a very strong physique. An extraordinary performer with a unique and intriguing personality.
Van de Vijver receives €2000,- for workshops or masterclasses in a foreign theatre city, money for flight tickets and a masterclass of choice at Kemna Training ánd the dvd-box with all Gouden Kalf winners.
New: Best of ITs on Tour
Impresario Via Rudolphi (a.o Theatre company Carver, Schweigman) was pleasantly surprised with the performances they visited at ITs this year. So suprised, that they offered two of the best performances a tour in at least 20 Dutch theatres. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the performers to show their work to a large and national audience. Vertreksvergunning by George Tobal and Gaan by Fleur van den Berg are the lucky winners.
The ITs Playwriting Award was awarded for the second time. Sytze Schalk receives the award for his theatre play Huid. Schalk, student at Writing for Performance at the HKU, wrote a substantial science-fiction epic which could easily be spread across two evenings. The play has a rich structure: alternating performance scenes with internal monologues, TV commercials and news bulletins. ‘Huid’ reads like a novel, or rather: a dark sci-fi movie, and at the same time it makes the reader eager for a staging. Huid will be published by Uitgeverij Theaterboek.
The ITs Parade Parel was awarded to the performance that, according to the jury, deserve a spot on the festival the Parade. The ITs Parade Parel has been awarded to George Tobal with his performance Vertreksvergunning. The jury: “Tobal manages to transform personal and social involvement in a confronting theatre story. His performance is a compilation of stories on subjects you think you know from the news papers. Tobal’s charm and acting qualities lift the performance up and he combines that with the form and the content of the play….” Tobal will shine once more during the Parade in Amsterdam, in Casa Mondo, from 9 till 13 august 2011.
The ITs Guest Award, the award for the best international performance, has been awarded to the production Insert Picture Hereb y Soetkin Demey, student at Dramatische Kunsten RITS Hogeschool Brussels. A moving and personal performance on anorexia.
